Following the recent debate in parliament, senior figures in Medicine and Dentistry including Professor Mike Lewis, Professor Saman Warnakulsuriya and Professor Crispian Scully who are fellows of BSOM, are signatories to a letter published in the Times yesterday calling for HPV vaccination in the UK to be available to both boys and girls on the NHS. At present only girls are vaccinated although boys can have the vaccination on request through their GP. This may involve a fee. The letter outlines the many other diseases in which HPV may be implicated including Oral Cancer and the benefits to both sexes of having boys vaccinated in reducing these diseases in the community. Currently boys and girls are routinely vaccinated only in Australia and Austria with most other countries including HPV on a vaccination programme for girls only as a result of the association of HPV with cervical cancer.
The letter can be accessed on line or in a print copy of the Times from the 13th June.
