Patients cannot refer themselves to Oral Medicine units.
In the first instance a consultation should be sought with either a general dental or medical practitioner.
A doctor or dentist (general practitioner or hospital-based) will make a referral to a Consultant in Oral Medicine when further advice is required about either diagnosis or management of an oral complaint.
The Oral Medicine service in each unit is lead by one or more Consultants. Doctors or dentists working under the supervision of a Consultant may see patients. Other members of the Oral Medicine team, such as nursing staff, also play important roles in patient care.
