To Become a Consultant in Oral Medicine
To become a Consultant in Oral Medicine with responsibility for patient care requires
considerable training and experience, including dual qualification in dentistry and medicine,
as outlined in the following schemata:
Bachelor Degree in Dental Surgery (BDS or BChD)
Registration with the General Dental Council

General Professional Training in Dentistry

Bachelor Degree in Medicine & Surgery (MBChB or equivalent)
Registration with the General Medical Council

Appointment to a post approved for Specialist Training in Oral Medicine
¯
FDS (Oral Medicine) and award of CCST

Consultant in Oral Medicine
Other Careers in Oral Medicine
Not every clinician interested in Oral Medicine will undertake the specialist training necessary to
be appointed a Consultant in Oral Medicine. A postgraduate training in dentistry is crucial to
the practice of Oral Medicine. As set out in the 2003 Ten-Year Strategy document, there are
important roles in Oral Medicine for this group of clinicians.
