The Department of Oral Medicine based at Glasgow Dental Hospital and School is one of the largest and busiest units in the UK. All four consultants are dentally and medically qualified. The unit provides a comprehensive Oral Medicine service for the West of Scotland thus covering more than half the population of Scotland. In addition the Department receives referrals from neighbouring Health Boards in Scotland. Current interests within the Department include the management of patients with dysplastic lesions, development of a rapid access system for patients with malignant disease, facial pain, Sjögren's Syndrome and the role of allergy in mucosal disease.
The Department accepts referrals from general dental practitioners, general medical practitioners as well as consultants from other dental and medical specialties. All referrals are screened and prioritised by the consultant staff. Practitioners wishing advice on patient management may contact the Department and consultant staff would be happy to discuss cases.
