The Unit of Oral Medicine at the Birmingham Dental School and Hospital serves the large
population of the West Midlands and neighbouring counties. The major interests of the Unit
include, Sjogren’s syndrome, oral premalignancy and drug induced oral mucosal disease.
Seven Oral Medicine Clinics are held each week, two of these being dedicated to undergraduate
student teaching. A consultant liaison psychiatrist attends the clinic twice a month for the
management of certain patients with orofacial dysasthaesias and atypical facial pain. There is
also a rapid access clinic which is set up to see patients with suspected oral malignancy and
ensures rapid diagnosis and onward referral to the oral oncology service.
In addition, multidisciplinary clinics for patients with Sjogren’s Syndrome are held once a
month and a clinic for patients with Behcet’s disease is held every three months
The Unit of Oral Medicine accepts referrals from general dental and medical practitioners as
well as tertiary referrals from a wide range of specialties.
