The Oral Medicine clinic is sited within the University Dental Hospital and School in Cardiff and is administered by the consultant / honorary consultant staff of the Department of Oral Surgery, Medicine and Pathology of Cardiff University and Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust. The Oral Medicine service has a long history and was one of the first clinics of its kind to be established in the UK. The clinic has over 1,000 new patient attendances per year and provides a comprehensive service for the investigation / management of orofacial disease.
Professor MAO Lewis holds general Oral Medicine clinics on Tuesday mornings and afternoons. Dr P Atkin holds general Oral Medicine clinics on Thursday mornings and afternoons, and Friday mornings.
Referrals are accepted from general dental practitioners, general medical practitioners and consultants in all medical and dental specialties. All referrals are prioritised by a consultant. Patients suspected of having oral malignancy are seen promptly. Members of clinical staff are always available to discuss possible referrals over the telephone.
The Oral Medicine clinic in Cardiff is one of the few units in the UK that is supported by a diagnostic Oral Microbiology service (Consultant in charge: Dr M J Wilson).
Research interests within the department include candidal infection, herpetic infection, oral ulceration, potentially malignant disease, dry mouth and orofacial pain.
