The Oral Medicine Unit is responsible for the diagnosis and medical management of patients
with a wide variety of disorders of the oral tissues, salivary glands and temporomandibular
joints and associated tissues, referred by General Medical and Dental Practitioners, Hospital
staff and other departments.  In addition the unit also undertakes the dental care of patients with
special needs.

The unit is one of the most research-active in the world. Current research interests of the unit
are centred upon the molecular epidemiology of human herpes virus 8 and Candida albicans in
the immunocompromised host, and the aetiology and management of immunologically-mediated
oral mucosal disease. Staff are editors and/or editorial members of several peer reviewed journals.

The department provides training (e.g. MSc, PhD and MD) to postgraduates from many parts of
the world, while staff are actively involved in Continuing Professional Education in several
European Countries. The staff of the unit are authors of several undergraduate and/or postgraduate
textbooks in Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Special Needs Dentistry, Paediatric Oral Medicine
and Clinical Dentistry.

The unit has a significant National and International reputation, with close involvement with the
British Society of Oral Medicine, the European Academy of Oral Medicine, the International
Academy of Oral Oncology and the International Federation of Oral Medicine.  The Eastman also
hosts the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Disability, Culture and Oral Health.
