The Oral Medicine Unit of Barts and the London NHS trust is based in the dental school of the
London in the East end of London. It is an academic unit, part of the department of clinical and
diagnostic oral sciences of the Dental Institute of Barts and the London Queen Mary’s School
of medicine and dentistry, with two honorary consultants who are dentally and medically
qualified.


Service provided includes:
Diagnosis and management of:-

· Oral ulcers and blisters

· Oral manifestations of systemic diseases

· Diseases involving the mouth and skin

· White patches – fast track

· Soft tissue lesions

· Facial pain of non-dental origin

· Trigeminal neuralgia


Practitioners wishing advice on patient management may contact the Unit and the consultant
staff would be happy to discuss cases. The unit accepts referrals from general dental practitioners,
general medical practitioners as well as consultants from other dental and medical specialties.
All referrals are screened and prioritised by the consultant staff.


Clinic Opening Times:

Oral Medicine clinics are held every Monday pm, Tuesday am, Thursday am; a Friday am.
In addition there are specialised clinics:-

· Biopsy clinic (Wednesday am).

· Facial pain clinic includes liaison psychiatrist once a month (Monday am).

· Joint neurosurgical trigeminal neuralgia clinic (Thursday pm, 2nd and 4th of the month).

· Joint clinic with Dermatology (Thursday am, 1st of the month).

· Bengali speaking patients who need an advocate are seen on a special clinic once a month.



Facial Pain Clinic

Aim:
Enable patients with chronic orofacial pain of non-dental origin to take control of their pain.

Objectives:

· Obtain a detailed pain assessment including psychosocial assessment.

· Measure pain and its disability.

· Assess patients’ treatment goals and ensure they are addressed.

· Manage patients holistically using medical, behavioural and psychological methods.

· Provide patient information including support groups.

· Provide basic counselling.

· Assess the need to refer patients for neurosurgery, psychiatric care, dental treatment.

· Discharge patients back to general medical practitioner once treatment is progressing satisfactorily.

· Audit work using the national Pain Audit Collection System (PACS) of the Pain Society.


Types of patients seen in facial pain clinic:

· Chronic facial pain of non-dental origin.

· Trigeminal neuralgia - primary and secondary.

· Burning mouth syndrome.

· TMJ pain / myofascial pain.

· Rare facial pains such as cluster headache, post herpetic neuralgia, neuropathic pain.
