The Department of Oral Medicine at Guy’s King’s and St Thomas’s (GKT) Dental Institute is based on two sites – one at Guy’s Dental Hospital and the other at King’s College Hospital. GKT Dental Institute is the largest dental school in the UK spread across two campuses and has a very busy Oral Medicine department with four Consultants in Oral Medicine and a part time Consultant in Dermatology.
Research interests within the department include Sjogren’s syndrome, orofacial granulomatosis, vesicullobullous disease, oral premalignancy and cancer, opportunistic infections, oral manifestations of HIV disease and oral ulceration. The department collaborates with other National and International centres of excellence on a wide range of research projects. We also host the WHO Collaborating Centre for Oral Cancer and Precancer in the United Kingdom.
The Department accepts primary referrals from general dental practitioners, general medical practitioners as well as tertiary and secondary referrals from other dental and medical specialists. All referrals are screened and prioritised by the consultant staff. Oral Medicine clinics are held daily at either site and in addition, multidisciplinary clinics for patients with Sjogren’s Syndrome, Behcet’s disease, oral manifestations of gastrointestinal disease and dermatoses are held once a month with consultant colleagues from Rheumatology, Ophthalmology, Gastroenterology and Dermatology respectively.
We are supported by a team of enthusiastic and dedicated Oral Pathologists who provide the diagnostic pathology service. We also have direct access to Oral Microbiology services, and immunology diagnostic laboratories situated in the St Thomas' Campus and a direct service link with Imaging and Dental Radiology within the campus.
