The Dublin Dental School and Hospital is the main training base for the School of Dental Science in Trinity College. The Oral Medicine unit has two consultants, Prof. Stephen Flint and Dr Claire Healy. Approximately 1200 new patients and over 5000 review patients are seen annually. Until 2002, the clinic was the only centre for secondary and tertiary referrals in southern Ireland.
Nine clinics are held per week. There are five undergraduate, one postgraduate, one dedicated infectious diseases and one joint dermatology/oral medicine clinic. A joint clinic for patients with dysplasia is held monthly with Prof. Leo Stassen (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery). Patients are seen only on referral from medical or dental practitioners.
The Oral Medicine unit is part of the Department of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology. The unit’s principal research interests include the causes of upper aerodigestive tract cancers, oral mucosal diseases, oral candidosis and inflammatory markers in aphthous stomatitis. Most research is carried out in collaboration with the Oral Pathology and Oral Biology Units.
