The Dublin Dental University Hospital is the main training base for the School of Dental Science in Trinity
College Dublin. The Oral Medicine unit has two consultants, Prof. Stephen Flint and Dr Claire Healy.
Approximately 1200 new patients and over 5000 review patients are seen annually. Until 2002, the clinic
was the only centre for secondary and tertiary referrals in southern Ireland.

Nine clinics are held per week, including five undergraduate and one postgraduate teaching clinics.  A
joint clinic for patients with dysplasia is held monthly with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery colleagues.
Patients are seen on referral from medical or dental practitioners and consultants in medical and dental
specialties.

The Oral Medicine unit is part of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine and
Oral Pathology. The unit’s principal research interests include the causes of upper aerodigestive tract
cancers and oral mucosal diseases, including oral candidosis, orofacial granulomatosis and oral lichen planus.
Some research is carried out in collaboration with the Oral Pathology and Oral Microbiology Units.
