Oral Medicine as a distinct speciality had not been practised in Cork for some years until a new
joint clinical/academic post was created in 2002. The Oral Medicine service has grown
considerably since then and serves the population of Cork city and county but also gets many
referrals from the southern half of the country from Waterford to Sligo.

The Oral Medicine unit is part of the department of Dental Surgery and is situated in the
University Dental School and Hospital which is adjacent to Cork University Hospital at Wilton.

Three Oral Medicine clinics are held each week. These are attended by dental undergraduates and
graduates who are preparing for MFD/MFDS examinations.

Referrals are accepted from dentists, medical practitioners and consultants in all medical and
dental specialties.

Research interests include oral mucosal diseases, facial pain and oral dysaesthesia. Short statement
