Juniors Meeting, November 29th 2003

The Juniors Group recently held a well-attended meeting at the Eastman Dental Institute organisedby Dr. John Buchanan. The clinical theme was of HIV and AIDs. Professor S. R. Porter gave an update of oral manifestations of HIV and other sexually-transmitted diseases. Overviews of HIV-related malignancies, HIV-associated infections and anti-retroviral therapies were delivered by consultant physicians. The meeting concluded with a series of case reports given by juniormembers of the Society under the chair of Dr. David Felix, President of BSOM. Lecturer Appointment at GKT, October 2003

Dr. Tim Poate has recently been appointed as Lecturer in Human Disease and Honorary SpR in
Oral Medicine at GKT in London. The Society offers congratulations and wishes him success in this new post that straddles the interface between Human Disease and Oral Medicine.


Oral Biosciences & Medicine and Oral Oncology EXTRA, September 2003

Two new journals of interest to Society members are to be launched in the near future. ‘Oral
Biosciences and Medicine’ aims to publish high quality scientific progress to clinicians, researchersand teachers. Further information can be found by clicking on the link below.

Oral Oncology EXTRA is a new online only, companion journal to Oral Oncology that will publish case reports. These should describe novel conditions or complications, have a valuable message, or illustrate a point of general interest. For further information, contact Professor C. Scully CBE.


Award of Honorary Fellowship to Professor R. A. Cawson, 13th September 2003

Professor R. A. Cawson was joined by an esteemed gathering of colleagues and friends from the
United Kingdom and abroad to celebrate his contributions to Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology, as well as many other aspects of dentistry and medicine. The ‘Horizons in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology’ meeting took place at the Eastman Dental Institute in London on September 13th 2003. On conclusion of the scientific programme, Professor Cawson was presented with an HonoraryFellowship of the Society by Mr. John Hamburger, Past-President of the Society. This honour was made in recognition of Professor Cawson’s outstanding contribution to Oral Medicine and the Society during its formative years. The celebration was concluded with a reception in the
refectory.

Epithelial Dysplasia Symposium, Oxford, 10th September 2003

A successful symposium entitled ‘Epithelial dysplasia and borderline cancer of the head and neck:controversies and future directions’ was held at St. Catherine’s College, Oxford on 10th September 2003. This was a joint meeting between the Society and the British Society for Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology in association with the British Assocation of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists. Invited speakers from each of the Societies and Assocations together with speakers with expertise in oncology , clinical genetics and molecular biology gave a comprehensive overview of current controversies and how insight into this difficult area is developing to improve patient care.


Consultant Appointment at the Eastman Dental Institute, August 2003

Dr. Tim Hodgson has been appointed as Consultant in Oral Medicine at the Eastman Dental
Institute in London. The Society offers congratulations and wishes Dr. Hodgson success in this
new post.


Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (ISFE), July 2003

Congratulations to Dr. Philip Atkin and Dr. Alan Mighell on their success in the July 2003 diet
of the ISFE in Oral Medicine. Both are now close to the completion of specialist training in Oral Medicine. In recent months, Dr. Michael Escudier and Dr. Tim Hodgson have also been

successful in the ISFE in Oral Medicine.


Council Elections, June 2003

Congratulations to Dr. Michael Pemberton and Dr. Michael Escudier on their election to
Council. Both will serve for a three year period until the Annual Conference in 2006.


IADR President, June 2003

The Society congratulates former BSOM President Professor S. J. Challacombe on his induction
as President of the International Association for Dental Research. Professor Challacombe will
be only the third United Kingdom-based President of IADR in it’s 82 year history.


Competencies in Oral Medicine, May 2003

Following circulation of the various sections of the competency document Fellows and Fellows
in Training were invited to submit comments on each statement in the document. Thereafter all
the comments were collated and each statement in the document was discussed by a small Focus
Group over a two day period prior to the Annual Scientific meeting in Dundee. The Focus Group comprised Tim Hodgson, David Felix, Alan Mighell, Mike Pemberton and Mike Lewis together with valuable input from Linda Prescott, Research Officer with NHS Education for Scotland.

A final draft was developed and submitted to the Specialist Advisory Committee for the
Additional Dental Specialties in May 2003 where it was agreed that this document will form the

blueprint for assessment in the future.

BSOM Ten-Year Strategy, May 2003

In 2002 Council convened a working group, chaired by Mr. John Hamburger, to formulate the

strategic goals of the Society over the next decade. A draft document was circulated to all Society members prior to discussion at the Annual General Meeting meeting in Dundee on May 1st 2003. The final version was published in June 2003.

Workforce Planning, May 2003

Council has recently undertaken an evaluation of the current and future workforce requirements
within the specialty. It was clear that there is a need to expand the number of specialist
training posts to meet the increasing demand for Oral Medicine services and planned retirements
of senior Consultants. Council has made representations to the Department of Health and others
in response to these conclusions.


Consultant Appointments at GKT, April 2003

Dr. Michael Escudier and Dr. Pepe Shirlaw have recently taken up appointments as Consultants in Oral Medicine at GKT in London. The Society offers congratulations and wishes them both well in their new posts.


Honorary Fellowships 2003

In 2003, Professor R. Cawson, Professor B. E. D. Cooke, Professor J. H. Jones, Professor Sir
David Mason, Professor J. C. Southam and Dr. W. R. Tyldesley accepted invitations to become
Honorary Fellows of the Society. These honours were made in recognition of their outstanding
contributions to Oral Medicine and the Society during its formative years.

Professor Cooke, Professor Mason, Professor Southam and Dr. Tyldesley attended a short
ceremony on May 2nd 2003 during the Society’s Annual Meeting in Dundee. Professor Cooke
spoke on behalf of the four recipients present to thank the Society for the honour. Professor Cawson received his Fellowship in London on September 13th 2003. Professor Jones hope to attend a similar ceremony in due course.
