The British Society for Oral Medicine
HONORARY FELLOWS
Invitations to accept an Honorary Fellowship of the Society are made by Council to esteemed colleagues whom have made an outstanding contribution to the specialty.  


2011
Professor Newell Johnson CMG (Australia, previously London) and Professor Thomas Lehner CBE (London) accepted Honorary Fellowships of the Society at the Annual Scientific Conference dinner held at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire on 5th May 2011.

2010
In 2010, to coincide with the European Association of Oral Medicine (EAOM) Conference in London the decision was made to award Honorary Fellowships to individuals outside the UK and Ireland whose contribution to the specialty of Oral Medicine was held in high esteem by the BSOM.

Professor Roy Rogers III (USA)

Professor Isaac van der Waal (Netherlands)

Professors Coogan, Greenspan, Jontell, Lockhart, Reichart, and van der Waal accepted the honour in person during the London conference dinner at the Guildhall on 25th September 2010  Professor Silverman had accepted the honour two days earlier at the end of the Transatlantic Day Meeting held between BSOM, EAOM and the American Academy of Oral Medicine (AAOM).

2009
Professor Bernard McCartan (Dublin) became an Honorary Fellow of the Society in 2009 and accepted the honour during the annual scientific meeting in Cork in May 2009.  

2008
Dr John Duxbury (Manchester) became an Honorary Fellow of the Society in 2008 and accepted the honour during the annual scientific meeting in Glasgow in May 2008.  

2007
Professor Roy Duckworth (London) became an Honorary Fellow of the Society in 2007 and accepted the honour during the annual scientific meeting in London on May 23rd 2007.    

In 2007 the Society noted with regret the deaths of Professor Roderick Cawson and Professor Brian Cooke who both accepted Honorary Fellowships of the Society in 2003.

2006
The Society noted with regret the death of Dr. Bill R. Tyldesley (Honorary Fellow 2003).

2003
In 2003, Professor Roderick Cawson (London), Professor Brian E. D. Cooke (Cardiff), Professor J. Harold Jones (Manchester), Professor Sir David Mason (Glasgow), Professor John C. Southam (Edinburgh) and Dr. William (‘Bill’) R. Tyldesley (Liverpool) accepted invitations to become Honorary Fellows of the Society.  These honours were made in recognition of their outstanding contributions  to Oral Medicine and the Society during its formative years.   

Professor Cooke, Professor Mason, Professor Southam and Dr. Tyldesley attended a short ceremony on May 2nd 2003 during the Society’s Annual Meeting in Dundee.   Professor Cooke spoke on behalf of the four recipients present to thank the Society for the honour.   

Professor Cawson received his Honorary Fellowship on conclusion of the ‘Horizons in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology’ meeting, which took place at the Eastman Dental Institute in
London on September 13th 2003.

Professor Jones received his Honorary Fellowship at the BSOM Annual Conference in         Manchester in May 2004.
