NICE Dental Recall Guideline, November 2004

The Society was a stakeholder for the recently published NICE dental recall guideline, which
considers the need for inspection of the oral soft tissues as part of overall oral health care. The

Oral Medicine Book Appeal, November 2004

Professor Zakrzewska is coordinating an appeal for Oral Medicine text books to be donated to the Dental School in Harare, Zimbabwe. The selection of Oral Medicine books currently available to the students is extremely limited. Anyone who would like to contribute to this appeal may send books to Professor Zakrzewska (Oral Medicine, Dental Institute, Turner St., London, E1 2AD) or directly to Professor Chidzonga, Dean of Harare Dental School in Zimbabwe.


Consultant Appointment at Cardiff, October 2004

Dr. Philip Atkin has recently been appointed Consultant in Oral Medicine at the University of
Wales Dental Hospital in Cardiff. The Society offers congratulations and wishes him success in
this post.

Dr. Deborah Greenspan - Norton M Ross Award August 2004

Deborah Greenspan has been awarded the American Dental Association 2004 Norton M. Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research and is the first woman to do so since the award was first bestowed in 1991. The award recognises Dr. Greenspan's work into dental issues related to the human immunodeficiency virus and the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.


Professor Joanna Zakrzewska July 2004

The Society sends it's warmest congratulations to Joanna Zakrzewska, a former President of the Society, on her promotion to Professor of Pain in Relation to Oral Medicine at Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Dentistry in London. This promotion recognises Professor Zakrzewska's longstanding work in the field of facial pain, and in particular, trigeminal neuralgia.


Professor Farieda Fortune
CBE June 2004

The Society passes on its congratulations to current BSOM Council member Professor Farieda
Fortune who has been appointed a
CBE in The Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2004. This was in recognition of her ‘services to dentistry’. Professor Fortune follows other Society members who have been honoured for their contributions to health care including Professor Sir David Mason CBE, Professor Harold Jones CBE and Professor Crispian Scully CBE.


Research Fellow/Honorary SpR Appointed at GKT June 2004

Congratulations to Dr. Richard Cook who has recently been appointed as Research Fellow/Honorary Specialist Registrar in Oral Medicine at GKT. Dr. Cook is currently in receipt of a
prestigious Department of Health, National Clinician Scientist Award.


BSOM Annual Conference, May 20th -21st May 2004

BSOM Senior and Junior Research Prizes, May 21st 2004

Professor Martin Thornhill and Dr. Tatiana Macfarlane
won the BSOM Senior and Junior Research Prizes,
respectively. Professor Thornhill described the
association between genetic polymorphisms and pain
severity in recurrent aphthous stomatitis.
Dr. Macfarlane presented the results of a large
epidemiological study investigating the aetiological
factors for specific types of orofacial pain.

Award of Honorary Fellowship to Professor H. Jones, May 20th 2004

Professor H. Jones CBE was awarded an Honorary Fellowship
of the Society at a short ceremony during the BSOM
Annual Conference. Professor Mike Lewis described
the many ways in which Professor Jones had advanced
the specialty of Oral Medicine during its formative years.

Human Disease Teachers Meeting, May 19th 2004

The Human Disease Teachers meeting was held as a satellite meeting to the BSOM Annual
conference. Professor Paul O’Neil, Dean of undergraduate medical education at Manchester
University delivered a presentation detailing the contrasts in the approaches to learning and
teaching and application of this to clinical care between inexperienced and experienced clinicians. The group later discussed the local arrangements in different dental schools for delivery of Human Disease learning and teaching and the associated funding arrangements supporting this. A further meeting was provisionally arranged for October 2004 in Glasgow.

Juniors Meeting, May 19th 2004

The Juniors Group met in Manchester as a satellite meeting to the Annual BSOM conference. Dr. Mike Beck, director of the Contact Dermatitis Investigation Unit in Manchester and Dr. Anne Field of the University of Liverpool delivered presentations on different aspects of contact
hypersensitivity including the uses of patch testing and latex allergy. Following afternoon tea,
there was discussion of current issues of relevance to career progression in Oral Medicine. This
meeting was the last to be organized by Dr. John Buchanan before he demitted office as Juniors
Representative to Dr. Rigel Allan.


BBC Radio 4 ‘Case Notes’, May 18th 2004

Current BSOM Council member Dr. Michael Escudier was the guest expert on the BBC Radio 4
‘Cases Notes’ broadcast on May 18th 2004 where he answered questions for 30 minutes on a range of topics related to oral health care. Dr. Escudier was following in the footsteps of former BSOM president Dr. Joanna Zakrzewska who was the guest expert on an earlier broadcast of the same programme when the topic was neuropathic pain.


Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (ISFE), April 2004

Congratulations to Dr. John Buchanan on his success in the April 2004 diet of the ISFE in Oral
Medicine. This will allow Dr. Buchanan’s name to be included on the GDC specialist list for

Oral Medicine in the near future.

Consultant Appointment at Edinburgh Dental Institute, April 2004

Dr. John Gibson has recently been appointed Consultant in Oral Medicine at Edinburgh Dental
Institute. The Society offers congratulations and wishes him success in this post.


SpR Appointment between Newcastle and Glasgow, March 2004

Dr. Meenha Rudralingam has recently taken up the post of SpR in Oral Medicine split between
Newcastle and Glasgow, with the post starting in Glasgow. This newly created training post is
the first in the specialty to involve two countries and will generate unique training opportunities.


Review of the Dentally Based Specialties and Specialist Lists, February 2004

The Standing Dental Advisory Committee (SDAC) has circulated an Interim Report in the form of
a Consultation Draft. Fellows and members of the Society are invited to comment on this report
before March 31st 2004. Further details can be obtained by contacting the Honorary Secretary.
