Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (ISFE), December 2006

Congratulations to Dr. Meenakshi Rudralingham on her success in the final 2006 diet of
the ISFE in Oral Medicine. Her name will be added to the GDC specialist list for Oral

Medicine.


BSOM Members Council Representative: Dr John Steele, December 2006

Dr John Steele has been elected by Members of the Society to serve on Council until 2009 in place

of Dr Anne Hegarty who has completed a 3 year term of office.


Glasgow: Professor Mike Lewis, November 2006

Professor Mike Lewis, President of BSOM, was elected Dean-elect (Vice-Dean) of the Dental
Faculty of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in October. He will serve in this

role until November 2007, and thereafter as Dean of the Dental Faculty for three years.


Dublin: Dr Claire Healy, November 2006

Dr Claire Healy, recently appointed as locum Consultant in Oral Medicine in Dublin, has been
awarded "The Dean's Scroll" by the Board of Faculty of Dentistry at Royal College of Surgeons in
Ireland. The Dean's Scroll is a new award to be given on an occasional basis to an "exceptional"

candidate undertaking the FFD examinations.


Dublin: Professor Bernard McCartan, November 2006

Following his retirement from the chair of Oral Medicine in Dublin, Professor Bernard McCartan
has been appointed as Honorary Professor of Dental Anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons of

Ireland.


Newcastle: Professor Marco Carrozzo, November 2006

Professor Marco Carrozzo has been appointed as Professor of Oral Medicine by the University of
Newcastle. Currently, he is Professor of Oral Medicine in Turin. Professor Carrozzo plans to

take up this appointment in March 2007 and the Society wishes him success with this.


Dublin: Professor Stephen Flint, September 2006

Congratulations to Dr Stephen Flint who has been promoted to a Chair in Oral Medicine at Trinity

College, Dublin with immediate effect.


Newcastle: Dr Konrad Staines, September 2006

Dr Konrad Staines has accepted appointment as Consultant in Oral Medicine in Newcastle and
plans to take up the post in January 2007. He will be moving from Glasgow and has also worked

in Malta in recent years. The Society wishes Dr Staines success in this post.


London: Dr Anne Hegarty, September 2006

Dr Anne Hegarty has been appointed to a Specialist Training post at the Eastman Dental Institute
in London. The Society wishes Dr Hegarty success in this post which will be taken-up in October

2006.


EAOM, September 2006

Society members were prominent at the recent 8th Biennial Congress of the European Association
of Oral Medicine (EAOM) in Zagreb, Croatia. Delegates from around the world came to listen to
invited presentations by Society members. In addition, particular congratulations are due to the
Eastman Dental Institute who won three prizes: Dr Stefano Fedele, clinical lecturer in Oral
Medicine was awarded best poster presentation for reporting the frequency and nature of oral
malignancy in patients with oral lichen planus; Dr Cristina Frezzini, Senior House Officer received a young researchers prize for her case presentation on trigeminal neuropathy and autonomic
neuropathy; and Dr Alison Boulter, Clinical Assistant, received best oral case presentation for reviewing the impact of osseointegrated implants in patients with oral mucosal disease.

Tacrolimus & Pimecrolimus, June 2006

Topical Tacrolimus and Pimecrolimus, two macrolide drugs effective in the management of some
patients with oral mucosal disease incompletely controlled by other interventions remain under
close scrutiny. Theoretical increased risks of either oral squamous cell carcinoma or lymphoma
remain unproven to date. The
European Medicines Agencys Committee for Medicinal Products
for Human Use (CHMP)
(March 2006) and the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory
Agency (MRHA)
(May 2006) have commented in relation to use of these drugs in dermatology

Dr Shahid Chaudhry, Cancer Research UK Fellowship & President’s Prize, May 2006

Later this year Dr Shahid Chaudhry MRCP, SpR in Oral Medicine at the Eastman Dental Institute
in London will take up a prestigious Cancer Research UK Clinical Training Fellowship to support
a PhD in tumour cell biology at the Cancer Research UK London Research Institute.
In addition,
he was recently awarded the 2005-6 President's prize of the Odontological Society of the Royal
Society of Medicine. Dr Chaudhry's presentation "Scurvy - a forgotten disease" was adjudged to
be the best clinical paper presentation. The Society congratulates Dr Chaudhry on both of these
significant achievements.


BSOM & BSOMP Joint Annual Scientific Meeting, London, May 2007

The Society will hold a joint Annual Scientific Meeting with the British Society for Oral and
Maxillofacial Pathology (BSOMP) in central London between 22nd-24th May 2007. Details of
this exciting meeting will be published in due course. The two Societies last held a joint

Scientific Meeting in Edinburgh in 2000.

BSOM Annual Scientific Meeting, London, May 2006

The Annual Scientific Meeting recently took place in central London at the BDA headquarters.
High profile invited speakers from St John’s Institute for Dermatology addressed the interface
between the practices of Oral Medicine and Dermatology. Other sessions included free scientific
presentations and clinical cases. Satellite meetings were undertaken by the Juniors and Human

Disease Teachers groups.

BSOM Council, May 2006

Professor Farida Fortune CBE has accepted the post of President-elect of the Society (2006-7)
and joins Council with immediate effect. Dr Phil Atkin and Dr Pepe Shirlaw have been elected
by Fellows of the Society to serve on Council until 2008 in place of Dr Michael Escudier and Dr
Mike Pemberton who completed their 3 year terms of office. Dr Escudier has been co-opted on

to Council as Honorary treasurer.

Manchester & Liverpool: Dr B Rajlawat, May 2006

Dr Rajlawat has been appointed to the Specialist Training post split between Manchester and
Liverpool. The Society wishes Dr Rajlawat success in this post which will be taken-up in

September 2006.


Manchester: Dr Rigel Allan, April 2006

Dr Rigel Allan has been appointed as Consultant in Oral Medicine in Manchester. The Society

wishes Dr Allan success in this post which will be taken-up in the near future.


Dundee: Dr John Gibson, February 2006

Dr John Gibson has been appointed as Consultant in Oral Medicine in Dundee having held
Consultant posts in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The Society wishes Dr Gibson success in this post

which will be taken-up in May 2006.
