BSOM Juniors Meeting Presentation Prize - further Sheffield Success, December 2008

The inaugural BSOM Juniors Meeting Presentation Prize was awarded to Dr Sarah Viggor from the

Deptartment of  Oral Medicine in Sheffield for her presentation entitled 'Dyskeratosis Congenita:

a Challenging Diagnosis' .  The £500 prize will support Dr Viggor in attending a conference, congress or

meeting of relevance to the practice of Oral Medicine.

 

SpR Appointment, Leeds, October 2008

Dr. Chinwike Oke-Nwosu has recently been appointed to a new Specialist Training post in Oral

Medicine in Leeds.  He will take up the three year post in January 2009.

 

EAOM Congress Salzburg Prizes, Sheffield Successes, September 2008

Members of the Sheffield Oral Medicine Unit

dominated the prizes at the 9th Biennial Congress

of the European Association of Oral Medicine in

Salzburg Austria.  Young Investigator Prizes were

awarded to Helen Colley (bottom right), Sarah

Grubb (bottom left) and Vanessa Hearnden (top left).   

Nishant Yardev (not pictured) won a Poster Prize.

EAOM Congress Salzburg, Professor Stephen Challacombe, September 2008

Professor Stephen Challacombe, Past-President of BSOM took up office as President of the European

Association of Oral Medicine at the 9th Biennial Congress in Salzburg, Austria.  Previously Professor

Challacombe has been President of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and in  

2007/8 was the first dentally-qualified President in the 182-year history of the Hunterian Society.

 

EAOM Congress Salzburg, Dr Tim Hodgson, September 2008

Dr. Tim Hodgson has been re-elected Honorary Treasurer of the European Association of Oral Medicine.

 

SpR Appointment, Cardiff, September 2008

Dr. Helen Rogers has recently been appointed to a prestigious Walport Specialist Training post in Oral

Medicine in Cardiff.

 

Professor Martin Thornhill, Sheffield - July 2008

Professor Martin Thornhill has been elected to Council as a Fellows representative for a period of

three years.

 

Professor Anne Field, Liverpool - June 2008

Dr Anne Field, President-Elect of the Society has been promoted to Honorary Professor of Oral

Medicine in Liverpool. This reflects Professor Field’s contribution to the specialty.

 

Professor Stephen Porter, Eastman Dental Institute, London - May 2008

Professor Stephen Porter has been appointed as Dean of the Eastman Dental Institute in London

and will take up the position in the autumn.

 

BSOM Annual Scientific Meeting, Glasgow, May 2008

The Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society was held in Glasgow between 22nd-23rd May 2008

at the Beardmore Conference Centre.  There was a varied programme related to Oral Medicine

practice.  Invited speakers included Dr Jason Leitch (National Clinical Lead for Patient Safety),

Dr Ken Paterson (Chair of the Scottish Medicines Consortium) and Dr Max Field, Reader in

Rheumatology & Medical Education.  Oral scientific papers and clinical cases were presented.  

The BSOM Juniors group held a well-attended meeting on 21st May 2008.

 

Dr John Duxbury - BSOM Honorary Fellowship, May 2008

Dr John Duxbury was made an Honorary Fellow of the Society during the conference dinner at

the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society on 23rd May 2008.  A citation was delivered by Dr.

Mike Pemberton and a response given by Dr Duxbury.

 

Patricia Correia - BSOM Junior Research Prize, May 2008

The competition for the Junior Research Prize was held during the Annual Scientific Meeting of

the Society on 23rd May 2008.  Patricia Correia of King’s College London Dental Institute was

awarded the prize for her oral paper describing the effects of LPS on salivary gland tissue.

 

Dr Alan Mighell - Honorary Secretary elect, April 2008

Dr. Alan Mighell has been elected Honorary Secretary of the Society for a period of 3 years after

Dr Anne Field demits office following the AGM in Glasgow in May.

 

Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (ISFE), April 2008

Dr. Richard Cook and Dr Stuart McEachen were successful in the recent diet of the ISFE in Oral

Medicine.   Their names will be added to the GDC specialist list for Oral Medicine.

 

Dr David Main, March 2008

The death of Dr David Main, formerly Reader and Honorary Consultant in Oral Medicine at Leeds

Dental Institute until 1997 is noted with regret.  

 

NICE Guideline: Prophylaxis against Infective Endocarditis, March 2008

The NICE guideline ‘Prophylaxis against infective endocarditis: antimicrobial prophylaxis

against infective endocarditis in adults and children undergoing interventional procedures’

has been published.  Professor David Wray, Professor of Oral Medicine at Glasgow University

chaired the guideline development group for this controversial topic.  

 

FGDP (UK) ad eundem: Dr’s Escudier, Shirlaw & Hodgson March 2008

Dr’s Michael Escudier (left), Pepe Shirlaw (centre)

and Tim Hodgson (right) were awarded the

FGDP (UK) ad eundem in recognition of their

contributions to development of the MJDF (Diploma

of Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties) at The

Royal College of Surgeons of England.

 

 

Pain Meetings in 2008, February 2008

Two pain meetings of relevance to orofacial pain will take place in the UK in the next 6 months.  

In April the British Pain Society will include a plenary lecture by Professor Zakrzewska and a further

workshop on trigeminal neuralgia.  The World Congress of Pain will be held in Glasgow in August.

 

Edinburgh RCS: Dr David Felix, January 2008

Dr David Felix is Dean-elect of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh

and will become Dean in September 2008.  At that time, both Royal College Dental Faculties in

Scotland will be lead by Past-Presidents of BSOM.  Dr Felix will serve as Dean for 3 years.

 

Professor Saman Warnakulasuriya OBE January 2008

Professor Saman Warnakulasuriya has been appointed OBE in The New Year Honours List 2008

in recognition of services to medicine.  Professor Warnakulasuriya follows other Society members

previously honoured for their contributions to healthcare including Professor Sir David  Mason CBE,

Professor Harold Jones CBE, Professor Crispian Scully CBE and Professor Farida Fortune CBE.
