BSOM Juniors Meeting Presentation Prize -
The inaugural BSOM Juniors Meeting Presentation Prize was awarded to Dr Sarah Viggor from the
Deptartment of Oral Medicine in Sheffield for her presentation entitled 'Dyskeratosis Congenita:
a Challenging Diagnosis' . The £500 prize will support Dr Viggor in attending a conference, congress or
meeting of relevance to the practice of Oral Medicine.

EAOM Congress Salzburg Prizes, Sheffield Successes, September 2008

Dr Anne Field, President-

Professor Stephen Porter, Eastman Dental Institute, London -
Professor Stephen Porter has been appointed as Dean of the Eastman Dental Institute in London
and will take up the position in the autumn.
BSOM Annual Scientific Meeting, Glasgow, May 2008
The Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society was held in Glasgow between 22nd-
at the Beardmore Conference Centre. There was a varied programme related to Oral Medicine
practice. Invited speakers included Dr Jason Leitch (National Clinical Lead for Patient Safety),
Dr Ken Paterson (Chair of the Scottish Medicines Consortium) and Dr Max Field, Reader in
Rheumatology & Medical Education. Oral scientific papers and clinical cases were presented.

Dr John Duxbury -
Dr John Duxbury was made an Honorary Fellow of the Society during the conference dinner at
the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society on 23rd May 2008. A citation was delivered by Dr.
Mike Pemberton and a response given by Dr Duxbury.
Patricia Correia -
The competition for the Junior Research Prize was held during the Annual Scientific Meeting of
the Society on 23rd May 2008. Patricia Correia of King’s College London Dental Institute was
awarded the prize for her oral paper describing the effects of LPS on salivary gland tissue.
Dr Alan Mighell -
Dr. Alan Mighell has been elected Honorary Secretary of the Society for a period of 3 years after
Dr Anne Field demits office following the AGM in Glasgow in May.
Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (ISFE), April 2008
Dr. Richard Cook and Dr Stuart McEachen were successful in the recent diet of the ISFE in Oral
Medicine. Their names will be added to the GDC specialist list for Oral Medicine.
Dr David Main, March 2008
The death of Dr David Main, formerly Reader and Honorary Consultant in Oral Medicine at Leeds
Dental Institute until 1997 is noted with regret.
NICE Guideline: Prophylaxis against Infective Endocarditis, March 2008
The NICE guideline ‘Prophylaxis against infective endocarditis: antimicrobial prophylaxis
against infective endocarditis in adults and children undergoing interventional procedures’
has been published. Professor David Wray, Professor of Oral Medicine at Glasgow University
chaired the guideline development group for this controversial topic.

Pain Meetings in 2008, February 2008
Two pain meetings of relevance to orofacial pain will take place in the UK in the next 6 months.
In April the British Pain Society will include a plenary lecture by Professor Zakrzewska and a further
workshop on trigeminal neuralgia. The World Congress of Pain will be held in Glasgow in August.

Professor Saman Warnakulasuriya OBE January 2008
Professor Saman Warnakulasuriya has been appointed OBE in The New Year Honours List 2008
in recognition of services to medicine. Professor Warnakulasuriya follows other Society members
previously honoured for their contributions to healthcare including Professor Sir David Mason CBE,
Professor Harold Jones CBE, Professor Crispian Scully CBE and Professor Farida Fortune CBE.
