BSOM Bursaries:
BSOM is inviting applications until Monday 16th November 2009 for Bursaries to support junior members of the Society to attend EAOM 2010.
Joint PILs with The British Association of Dermatologists -
BSOM in conjunction with the British Association of Dermatologists have prepared joint patient information leaflets for Oral Lichen Planus and Oral Pemphigoid. Further joint PILs are planned between the two Societies.

Over 90 delegates gathered in Jury’s Hotel , Cork for the first Annual Scientific Meeting of BSOM to be held outside of the United Kingdom for over 15 years. Dr Christine McCreary, meeting organiser, arranged a diverse programme that included invited presentations from Professor Fergus Shanahan and Dr Paula O’Leary, free scientific papers and clinical cases.

Professor Bernard McCartan has become the ninth Honorary Fellow of the Society. Professor Farida Fortune, President of BSOM read the citation at the Annual Scientific Meeting Dinner at Balymaloe House, West Cork. Professor McCartan responded and recognised those colleagues who had inspired him to his own professional achievements.

Dr Karwan Moutasim -
The BSOM Juniors Group Presentation Prize (worth up to £500) and the BSOM Junior Prize (£200) were won by Dr Karwan Moutasim (Barts and the London) at the Cork Annual Scientific Meeting. His presentations covered a case of amyloidosis with oral manifestations and investigation of the pathoaetiology of oral submucous fibrosis.

Dr Anwar Tappuni, Lecturer in Oral Medicine at Barts and the London has been added to the BDA Roll of Distinction in recognition of her outstanding service to UK dentistry. This reflects her long association with refugee dentists. Dr Tappuni has been instrumental in mentoring and running a study group for refugee dentists to aid them in overcoming barriers to joining the UK professional workforce.

The appointment of Dr Anita Nolan, Consultant in Oral Medicine in Dundee to the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) was recently announced by the Home Secretary. The ACMD is an independent expert body that advises government on drug related issues in the UK.

The 2009 ‘UK National Dental Award for the Most Outstanding Achievements in Dentistry’ has been awarded to Professor Crispian Scully, Honorary Consultant in Oral Medicine at the Eastman Dental Institute. This follows on from other recent honours including Gold Medals from the University of Santiago de Compostela and the University of Granada, the Award of UK Man of the Year by the American Biographical Institute, and Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Granada, Helsinki, and Pretoria.
